Thank you for this wisdom, Karen, and the charming illustration. I hadn't thought about cooking/baking as self-care, but I might adopt the idea. At least it brings forth something tangible, which is harder (for me) to see with writing and praying.
You are such a beautiful writer, Karen. Even though I'm an Aussie I do take an interest in American politics (it's really much the same here, although the racism and sexism simmer beneath the surface and are hidden in government policies and their use of the media, rather than being blatantly obvious). I am loving the baby analogy... I have my fingers crossed for a girl 🤞
Yes and yes for sure, even to the soup--for which, it just so happens, I happen to have the listed ingredients on hand. Tomorrow the housekeeper and cook (me) is set to work. Today the writer was in residence--you know how that is.:
"I make soup with chunks of sweet potato, broth, lots of black-eyed peas and diced tomatoes, diced jalapenos and herbs."
Thank you for this post, Karen. It's really helpful and one I'll be sharing with friends.
My own self-care involves exercise. I walk for an hour most mornings and bicycle 40 minutes most evenings. When it gets colder, I will swim at the Y. I started making exercise a priority August 1st and it has made a tremendous difference in my mood and overall well-being.

You make an excellent point about tangibility, Judy.
May I add one more self-care suggestion? Read your favorite Substack authors. Especially those who also share delightful illustrations! ❤😊
♥️♥️♥️
Great post! I would not have thought of preparing for the "birth" of our next president. Thank you.
By the way, this is my preparation for living each day:
Breathe in and out, then say or think: I am choosing to spend my day, my life carrying the vibration of creation.
I learned this from a friend and have been doing it ever since, in the morning and at any other time during the day. It's been so helpful.
That's beautiful, Kate. Thank you.
